This is my replica ‘Paraset’, or ‘Whaddon Mk 7’.the original sets were used by ‘special forces’ (SOE). They were built into ‘cash
boxes’ ie metal cases, also wooden cases and suitcases. See my ‘favourite sites’. Mine is built into an evacuee’s case of the 1940’s. The TX runs about five watts CW output and the receiver, a TRF is very sensitive. It covers eighty and forty metres.
First picture, this is the underside view. Some components are as original others are modern ones to make it work. I intend to replace all modern components as and when I get originals.
Second picture, valves and crystal unplugged showing original style valve holders. The integral morse key can be seen on the right.
Third picture, valves and crystal in place ready for use. The original used 6 volt valves, I have used 12 volt equivalents to enable the set to run off a 12 volt supply. There should be no difference in performance.
Last picture, The complete set up, the power supply is on the left, it is transistorised and made in the early 50’s designed for the WS62 set, it runs off a 12 volt mains driven supply or a 12 volt battery. The original ran on 6 volts with a ‘vibrator’ power supply. Audio output is to headphones, the ones I have are S.G.Brown’s from the 1940’s. The antenna is approx 60 feet of ‘throw-out’ wire kept on a reel.
This simple set has given me contacts into Europe using the 60 feet of wire supported by a tree as an antenna. Tuning of the receiver is somewhat critical and requires patience. Some replica builders have modified the design to provide bandspread tuning on either eighty or forty.
LSWC hold a construction contest every year and my Paraset won the contest in November 2010. I was presented with the Joe Rose Memorial trophy at the last AGM. Joe was a member of the club before he died. He was very interested in home construction hence the trophy in his remembrance. His XYL Pam is the club secretary and has held the post for many years now.
My next project is to build a replica of the Mk XV transmitter, I have started collecting the parts, it may take some time !
